What is Learn & Serve

Overview
Learn & Serve Ohio operates within the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and makes funds from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) available for school-based service learning to local education agency (LEA) partnerships. Funding is intended to support the implementation, operation or expansion of programs that advance service learning as a teaching, learning, and youth development strategy.

Learn and Serve America is a program for school-age youth administered by the Corporation for National Service and created by the National and Community Service Act of 1990, as amended (42 U.S.C. 12501 et seq.).

The Corporation’s mission is to engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in community-based service through a range of national and community service programs. This service addresses the nation’s education, public safety, human and environmental needs, and achieves direct and demonstrable results. In doing so, programs foster civic responsibility, strengthen the ties that bind us together as a people, and provide educational opportunities and learning experiences for those who make a substantial commitment to serve.

Learn and Serve Ohio's vision is to make service learning a vital part of Ohio's educational system. All students will graduate highly skilled and educated and service learning will be an integral part of enriching their education. Ohio's graduates will be civic minded and informed citizens prepared for productive lives within their families and communities.

Goal
Learn and Serve Ohio’s goal is to support service-learning programs that provide youth with opportunities to learn and develop by bringing together classroom instruction and community service. Grants are awarded to local education agencies that engage students K-12 in opportunities to help communities address education, public safety, human and environmental needs. Funds are used to create new programs, replicate existing programs and provide training and development to staff, students, and volunteers.
