Statewide Initiatives

The following is a list of statewide initiatives:

  • Learn and Serve America Homeland Security Grant:
    Ohio is one of ten states to receive funds to implement a Learn and Serve America Homeland Security Grant. This grant of $440,000 will address homeland security concerns through the active participation of youth engaged in service learning that meets community needs while developing students' academic and civic skills. Ohio will tap students as an important resource in planning for and responding to the health, safety, and security concerns in our state.
  • Represent ODE on Ohio's Community Service Council:
    S erve as a member of the council, which is made up of 13 appointees by the Governor and 8 state agency and legislative representatives. The Council's mission is to foster an infrastructure that connects, supports, promotes, and replicates effective community service, service-learning and volunteer programs statewide.
  • Presidential Freedom Scholarships:
    Through the Presidential Freedom Scholarship program, each high school in the country may select up to two students to receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of outstanding leadership in service to their community. With funds appropriated by Congress, the Corporation for National and Community Service provides $500 for each scholarship, which must be matched with $500 secured from the community by the participating school. In addition to the scholarship, students receive a letter of recognition and a President's Volunteer Service Award pin.
  • National Service-Learning Leaders Schools:
    Recognizes schools for exemplary integration of service into the academic curriculum and the life of the school. Since its inception, 12 Ohio schools have been recognized as national leader school: 1) Stuebenville High School, 2) Upper Arlington High School, 3) North Olmsted High School, 4) Hobart Middle School, 5) Hastings Middle School, 6) Jones Middle School, 7) Newcomerstown High School, 8) Ripley High School, 9) Perry Middle School, 10) Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center, 11) Clark Center Alternative School, 12) Elida High School.
  • K-16 Partnership:
    A partnership between Ohio Campus Compact and ODE to develop a K-16 website and award K-16 mini grants to colleges and universities who partner with schools to implement a service-learning program.
  • Ohio Make A Difference Day:
    S upported by over 40 statewide organizations across Ohio during this national day of helping others. MDD (Make a Difference Day) encourages locally designed projects to mobilize volunteers to make a difference in their communities.
  • Learn & Serve Ohio's Annual Evaluation Report:
    The report highlights successful service-learning programs and yearly progress.
