Safety in Ohio Through Service (SOS):
Replicable Statewide Service-Learning Model for Homeland Security will integrate K-12 youth into the service-learning and volunteerism components of Ohio’s broad and on-going homeland security efforts, building upon state and local collaborations through the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and Learn and Serve Ohio. Building upon state and local partnerships with businesses, private schools, first responders, faith-based and community organizations, six Local Education Agencies (LEAs) will develop prototypes of homeland security related service-learning projects in Urban, Rural and Suburban populations. AED is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to solving critical social problems in the U. S. and throughout the world and to building the capacity of individuals, communities, and institutions to become more self-sufficient. The major areas of focus include education, health, youth development and the environment.

Alliance for Service-Learning in Educational Reform
[Council for Chief State School Officers]

The Alliance, which has promoted service-learning as an impetus for educational reform and policy advocacy, has published Standards of Quality for School-based Service-learning (1995) and other related standards for community-based service-learning.

American Youth Policy Forum
The American Youth Policy Forum, a nonprofit, nonpartisan professional development organization based in Washington, DC, provides learning opportunities for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working on youth and education issues at the national, state, and local levels. Among its service-learning publications is Finding Common Ground: Service-Learning and Education Reform, a survey of 28 leading school reform models.

America’s Promise
This organization works with many groups to develop resources which young people need to flourish. The Five Promises, the primary focuses of this organization, are: caring adults, safe places, healthy start, effective education, and opportunities to help other. They have indicated that “less than half of all young people who say they want to help others in their community have been asked to do so.”

Asset-Based Community Development Institute
[Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University]

The Institute, established by the Community Development Program at Northwestern University's Institute for Policy Research, is built on three decades of community development research by John Kretzmann and John L. McKnight. The Institute spreads its findings on capacity-building community development through extensive interactions with community builders, and by producing practical resources and tools for community builders to identify, nurture, and mobilize neighborhood assets.

Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)
The ASCD has included service-learning as a major component of its character education initiative. The association offers professional development experiences in curriculum and supervision, disseminates information, and encourages research and evaluation. They also provide publications and professional development conferences.

Campus Compact
The Campus Compact concentrates on institutions of higher education but often works directly with K-12 schools in designing, supervising, evaluating, training, and implementing service-learning programs. College students often provide assistance in K-12 service-learning projects as part of their service activity.

Center for Environmental Education
Based at Antioch New England Graduate School, the Center provides print and on-line resources for teachers interested in integrating environmental education into the K-12 curriculum.

Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE)
CIRCLE promotes research on the civic and political engagement of young adults, ages of 15 and 25. Although they conduct and fund research rather than practice, their projects support have practical implications for those who work to increase youth engagement in civic life. They also serve as a clearinghouse for relevant information and scholarship.

Close Up Foundation
The Close Up Foundation is one of the nation’s largest non-profit , non-partisan citizenship education organizations. Since its founding in 1970, Close Up has worked to promote responsible and informed participation in the democratic process through a variety of educational programs, including those in service-learning.

Coalition for Essential Schools
Based on decades of research and practice, the Coalition has adopted the Common Principles which, among a number of other goals, calls for democratic and equitable school policies and practices and close partnerships with the school’s community. The Coalition views service-learning as one of the strategies for improving schools. Their web site has links to many resources for school improvement.

Collaboration to Advance Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL)
CASEL’s mission is to establish social and emotional learning as an essential part of K-12 programs. Service-learning is viewed as one of the key elements in the process. This is spelled out in their report Making the Case for Social and Emotional Learning and Service-Learning, published jointly with the Education Commission of the States.

Communities in Schools
Communities in Schools is a leading community-based organizations which works to help children and youth succeed in school and prepare for life. For over 25 years, they have championed the connection of needed community resources and schools. By bringing caring adults into schools, CIS provides a link between educators and the community. Service-learning also has been one of their major initiatives.

Community Works
The web site of this on-line Resource Center contains numerous service-learning and community-based teaching tools, curriculum examples, and reflections for teachers. Community Works offers specialized support and training to assist teachers in integrating community-based education and service-learning.

Constitutional Rights Foundation
The CRF helps young people develop skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to serve their communities and nation as active citizens. This non-partisan organization reaches out to K-12 students through teacher training, resource experts, and innovative curriculum. They also maintain a database of school-based service programs across the country and a library of resource materials from a wide array of other sources.

Corporation for National and Community Service
This umbrella organization for Learn and Serve America, AmeriCorps, VISTA, and the Senior Corps provides service programs for lifelong citizen participation. CNCS also functions as a clearinghouse of information and technical expertise on service opportunities and provides funding on a competitive basis for state and national organizations.

Earth Force
Earth Force engages young people as active citizens who strive to improve the environment and their communities now and in the future. They do so by training and supporting educators in a variety of programs that enable young people to lead community action projects focused on creating sustainable solutions to local environment issues in the community. Earth Force encourages young people to look at the root cause of the issue and focus on creative solutions that address a public policy or community practice.

Educational Commission of the States
This organization helps governors, legislators, and state education officials develop policies for, among other actions, improving service-learning. A major focus has been service-learning and civic engagement, resulting in the formation of the National Center for Learning and Citizenship which provides leadership in the Compact for Learning and Citizenship, a national organization of chief state schools officers and district superintendents committed to integrating service-learning into K-12 schools.

John Gleen Institute for Public Service and Public Policy
The John Glenn Institute at The Ohio State University was formed to help connect citizens to their government, to help policymakers and the community learn about public issues, and to teach members of the community to lead policy changes. The Institute also has established the John Glenn Scholars in Service-Learning initiative. Between February 2004 and May 2006, they will have recognized 25 scholars whose efforts contribute to advancing the understanding of or adoption of service-learning, with specific emphasis on K-12 education.

Learning In Deed
This W. K. Kellogg Foundation initiative, with a focus on service-learning, is based on research gathered from national demonstration sites and contains links to curriculum resources, policy, research, and much more. The four major components of the program include: Policy and Practice Demonstration Projects, the National Commission on Service-Learning, the Learning In Deed K-12 Service-Learning Leadership Network, and the Learning In Deed Research Network.

Lions Quest International
Lions Quest programs are school-based, comprehensive, positive youth development and prevention programs that unite the home, school and community and cultivate healthy young people of strong character through life skills, character education, civic values, drug prevention, and service-learning. The three major programs -- Skills for Growing (K – 5), Skills for Adolescence (6-8), and Skills for Action (9-12) -- teach children and youth skills needed for everyday living.

National Council for the Social Studies
The National Council notes that social studies educators teach students the content knowledge, intellectual skills, and civic values necessary for fulfilling the duties of citizenship in a participatory democracy. The mission of Council is to provide leadership, service, and support for all social studies educators. The Council also has implemented quality service-learning programs at the K-12 level.

National Dropout Prevention Center/Network
The Center provides information and promotes networking for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and families to increase opportunities for youth in at-risk situations to receive quality education and services needed to successfully graduate from high school.. They also provide an extensive database of information, organizations, programs, and publications relating to service-learning as well as technical assistance in setting up mentoring and service-learning programs.

National Elementary School Principals
The goal of the NAESP is to lead in the advocacy and support for elementary school principals (K-8) and their faculty in their commitments to all of their students. There publications cover a wide array of curricular and instructional endeavors.

National Middle School Association
Located in Westerville, Ohio, the National Middle School Association is dedicated to improving the educational experiences of young adolescents by providing vision, knowledge, and resources to all who serve them in order to develop healthy, productive, and ethical citizens.

The NASSP is a full-service organization that meets the needs of middle and secondary school administrators trough a variety of approaches including advocacy, publications, grants and scholarships, and professional development.

National Service-Learning Clearinghouse
The Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse supports the K-16 service-learning community as well as others interested in strengthening schools and communities using service-learning methodologies. The Clearinghouse maintains a website with timely information and relevant resources to support service-learning programs, practitioners, and researchers. The Clearinghouse operates national listservs for K-12 service-learning and higher education service-learning to encourage discussion and exchange of ideas. They also maintains an ever-growing library collection that is available to Learn and Serve America grantees and sub-grantees.

National Service-Learning Partnership
The Partnership is a national network of members dedicated to advancing service-learning as a core part of every young person's education. The network consists of more than 10,000 members in all 50 states. The Partnership concentrates on strengthening the impact of service-learning on young people's learning and development, especially their academic and civic preparation. The Partnership supports members through sharing resources, organizing change, and sponsoring innovation.

National Society for Experiential Education
The National Society for Experiential Education is a nonprofit membership association of educators, businesses, and community leaders. NSEE also serves as a national resource center for the development and improvement of experiential education programs nationwide. NSEE supports the use of learning through experience for such goals as civic and social responsibility, career exploration, and personal growth.

National Youth Leadership Council
The National Youth Leadership Council is a network of programs which focuses on activities on the local level that provide opportunities to a diverse group of young people. The Council helps children and youth grow into responsible adults by encouraging, recognizing, and developing leadership. Based in Washington, DC, the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network engages and mobilizes millions of volunteers who are helping to solve serious social problems in communities across the country. Service-Learning Northwest was established to meet the training and resource needs of educators, students, and community-based organizations throughout the service-learning community. Located at Educational Service District 112 in Vancouver, Washington, the organization is dedicated to developing high quality service-learning programs, practices, and tools. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to apply knowledge to solve people-problems.
