Safety in Ohio Through Service (SOS):
Replicable Statewide Service-Learning Model for Homeland Security
will integrate K-12 youth into the service-learning and volunteerism
components of Ohio’s broad and on-going homeland security
efforts, building upon state and local collaborations through
the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and Learn and Serve
Ohio. Building upon state and local partnerships with businesses,
private schools, first responders, faith-based and community
organizations, six Local Education Agencies (LEAs) will develop
prototypes of homeland security related service-learning projects
in Urban, Rural and Suburban populations. The results of these

The Alliance, which has promoted service-learning as an impetus

Youth Policy Forum
The American Youth Policy Forum, a nonprofit, nonpartisan
professional development organization based in Washington,
DC, provides learning opportunities for policymakers, practitioners,
and researchers working on youth and education issues at the
national, state, and local levels. Among its service-learning
publications is Finding Common Ground: Service-Learning and
Education Reform, a survey of 28 leading school reform models.

This organization works with many groups to develop resources
which young people need to flourish. The Five Promises, the
primary focuses of this organization, are: caring adults,

Community Development Institute
[Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University]
The Institute, established by the Community Development Program
at Northwestern University's Institute for Policy Research,
is built on three decades of community development research
by John Kretzmann and John L. McKnight. The Institute spreads
its findings on capacity-building community development through
extensive interactions with community builders, and by producing
practical resources and tools for community builders to identify,
nurture, and mobilize neighborhood assets.

for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)
The ASCD has included service-learning as a major component
of its character education initiative. The association offers
professional development experiences in curriculum and supervision,
disseminates information, and encourages research and evaluation.

Compact
The Campus Compact concentrates on institutions of higher
education but often works directly with K-12 schools in designing,
supervising, evaluating, training, and implementing service-learning

Based at Antioch New England Graduate School, the Center provides

(CIRCLE)
CIRCLE promotes research on the civic and political engagement
of young adults, ages of 15 and 25. Although they conduct
and fund research rather than practice, their projects support

for relevant information and scholarship.

Up Foundation
The Close Up Foundation is one of the nation’s largest
non-profit , non-partisan citizenship education organizations.
Since its founding in 1970, Close Up has worked to promote
responsible and informed participation in the democratic process

for Essential Schools
Based on decades of research and practice, the Coalition has
adopted the Common Principles which, among a number of other
goals, calls for democratic and equitable school policies
and practices and close partnerships with the school’s
community. The Coalition views service-learning as one of

to Advance Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL)
CASEL’s mission is to establish social and emotional
learning as an essential part of K-12 programs. Service-learning
is viewed as one of the key elements in the process. This

with the Education Commission of the States.

Communities in Schools is a leading community-based organizations
which works to help children and youth succeed in school and
prepare for life. For over 25 years, they have championed
the connection of needed community resources and schools.
By bringing caring adults into schools, CIS provides a link
between educators and the community. Service-learning also
has been one of their major initiatives.

specialized support and training to assist teachers in integrating

Rights Foundation
The CRF helps young people develop skills, knowledge, and
dispositions necessary to serve their communities and nation
as active citizens. This non-partisan organization reaches
out to K-12 students through teacher training, resource experts,
and innovative curriculum. They also maintain a database of
school-based service programs across the country and a library
of resource materials from a wide array of other sources.

for National and Community Service
This umbrella organization for Learn and Serve America, AmeriCorps,
VISTA, and the Senior Corps provides service programs for
lifelong citizen participation. CNCS also functions as a clearinghouse
of information and technical expertise on service opportunities
and provides funding on a competitive basis for state and
national organizations.

Force
Earth Force engages young people as active citizens who strive
to improve the environment and their communities now and in
the future. They do so by training and supporting educators
in a variety of programs that enable young people to lead
community action projects focused on creating sustainable
solutions to local environment issues in the community. Earth
Force encourages young people to look at the root cause of
the issue and focus on creative solutions that address a public
policy or community practice.

Commission of the States
This organization helps governors, legislators, and state
education officials develop policies for, among other actions,
improving service-learning. A major focus has been service-learning
and civic engagement, resulting in the formation of the National
Center for Learning and Citizenship which provides leadership
in the Compact for Learning and Citizenship, a national organization
of chief state schools officers and district superintendents
committed to integrating service-learning into K-12 schools.

John
Gleen Institute for Public Service and Public Policy
The John Glenn Institute at The Ohio State University was
formed to help connect citizens to their government, to help
policymakers and the community learn about public issues,
and to teach members of the community to lead policy changes.
The Institute also has established the John Glenn Scholars
in Service-Learning initiative. Between February 2004 and
May 2006, they will have recognized 25 scholars whose efforts
contribute to advancing the understanding of or adoption of
service-learning, with specific emphasis on K-12 education.

This W. K. Kellogg Foundation initiative, with a focus on
service-learning, is based on research gathered from national

Quest International
Lions Quest programs are school-based, comprehensive, positive

The Center provides information and promotes networking for
researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and families to

Located in Westerville, Ohio, the National Middle School Association

Service-Learning Clearinghouse
The Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse
supports the K-16 service-learning community as well as others
interested in strengthening schools and communities using
service-learning methodologies. The Clearinghouse maintains
a website with timely information and relevant resources to
support service-learning programs, practitioners, and researchers.
The Clearinghouse operates national listservs for K-12 service-learning
and higher education service-learning to encourage discussion
and exchange of ideas. They also maintains an ever-growing

The Partnership is a national network of members dedicated
to advancing service-learning as a core part of every young
person's education. The network consists of more than 10,000
