The Student Safety Corps is a trained group of students who serve two functions. First, in the event of an emergency they can assist local Fire and Emergency crews in a number of ways; from basic medical assessment and first aid until help arrives to setting up temporary housing after a disaster. Secondly, the Student Safety Corps can serve as a group to raise public awareness relating to safety and preparedness.

Challenges Encountered:

  • Securing enthusiastic partners in local fire and rescue departments
  • Fitting the instructional curricular components into each class curricula

Recommendations for Implementation:

  • Ensure full support from local Fire Department to help in setting goals, designing activities, and assisting with training
  • Limit recruitment to 11th and 12th grade students as they have the maturity, interest, and sense of responsibility necessary for the Corps to succeed
  • Rehearse all aspects of the program to ensure students develop and can successfully use the necessary skills for crisis situations
  • Embed aspects of learning module in as many curricular areas as possible so students see the linkage of ideas
  • Build incentives into the program to keep student interest high

  • The most crucial aspect of this module is the successful interaction and involvement of the local Fire Department

Curriculum Integration:

  • Social Studies
  • Language Arts
  • Science
  • Foreign Language
  • Health
  • Family and Consumer Services
  • Math

Implementation Steps:

  • Identification of units within different curricular areas where links can be established to project as a whole
  • Introduction of lessons and activities within each curricular area that correspond to critical concepts of Student Safety Corps
  • Training by local First-Responders
  • Mock Disaster Drills
  • Continuation of Skills learned via service to greater community
  • Develop interest in 11th grade students to prepare for following year
