Community Receives Service From RULH Students and Staff

Kristi Scott , Ripley

Let’s talk students having a voice in community service projects!!!!!

The RULH School District is a “Model School” for the statewide Learn and Serve America initiative. Last spring James Gilkison, art instructor with the school district, appeared before the Aberdeen Village Council to seek help with a project that he and the students of the Ripley High School wanted to complete. He suggested the retaining wall that faces the Simon Kenton Bridge that links Ohio and Kentucky become a painted mural to welcome all who came to Ohio. The students got busy and drew up their own plans for the mural and Mr. Gilkison approached Kristi Scott, project director of the Learn and Serve America grant for funds to complete the project. Taco Bell/KFC wanted to come onboard and now between the Village of Aberdeen, Learn and Serve America and Taco Bell the mural will become a reality. Students were the creator of the mural pictures which depict Ohio’s heritage and economy. They will also complete the drawings as well as the painting of the actual mural.

Taco Bell held a taco eating contest and participants from as far as Columbus, Ohio came to claim the championship. However, a student from Adams County took home the trophy when he ate 18 tacos in 7 minutes. The manager of the Aberdeen Taco Bell, stated that Taco Bell/KFC was proud to be a community partner with the Ripley Union Lewis Huntington School District. He handed over a check for $400.00 for the project. Taco Bell also donated t-shirts to all participants and gave away free tacos to all patrons for the time during the contest. A Learn and Serve America mini-grant for $450.00 was also awarded to Mr. Gilkison and his students for their efforts with this awesome community service project. The Village Council donated an undisclosed amount to the mural project. The project spans from April 2007 through August 2008 with the first section to be completed before winter 2007.
