the Holidays

During the weeks leading up to the holidays,
students from the Georgetown Learn and Serve “Achievers,
the National Honor Society, the FFA, FCCLA and the Athletic
Department collaborated to ensure the true meaning of Christmas
was shared throughout the Georgetown community. This year the
students realized that the best way to ensure greater results
of all their individual service learning projects would be to
join together as a team. With the Christmas spirit as a force
multiplier, the students assisted one another with their service
learning projects.
The canned food drive was the kick-off event,
proving very successful. This project was spearheaded by the
National Honor Society advisor, Mrs. Susan Noll. Success was
achieved, with the 3,359 cans going to the Helping Hands’
distribution center. Students from all the school organizations
assisted with the canned food drive. Several FFA students
delivered the cans to Helping Hands. This service learning
project also served as the primary “Make a Difference”
project for the Achievers, Learn and Serve Ohio.
The Linus Project still remains high on the priority list
for the FCCLA and the “Achievers.” Mrs. Brenda
Dixon and the FFCLA oversee the students’ work. They
donated hundreds of hours in completing the blankets for distribution
throughout the holiday season. This year, they cut the fleece
material for adult size blankets. Then they carefully craft
it, completing 60 blankets for distribution. This year the
FCCLA students, assisted by the Achievers have started a new
project, hand-made dolls. The dolls are for distribution to
various organizations this spring.
The FFA and the Learn and Serve “Achievers”
have also collaborated their efforts again this year. Working
together, they created fruit baskets and distributed the fruit,
including citrus fruit, pears and apples, to a number of various
organizations around town.
Citizenship and community service are part
of the curriculum of each of these high school electives.
As service learning strengthens the community, the participating
students are actively preparing themselves as good citizens.
Service learning projects continue to be a strong linkage
between the Georgetown community and these young high school
students.
